World
Biomes
Over 350 biomes can generate in a fresh Nytheria world, about 290 of them from mods. Biome counts per dimension and per mod, the largest sets, what each mod adds and how the counting works.
Nytheria has over 350 biomes. The exact figure is 353 biomes that can generate in a fresh world of this pack: 63 vanilla and 290 from mods. This page is part of World Generation and lists them by dimension and by mod, with the counting rule for every number.
How to read this page#
"Effective" means a biome that can really generate: it exists in the pack, a dimension's biome source uses it, and it is not switched off. Tables are grouped by dimension. "Modded" means added by a mod; two of the 290 are Vanilla Backport biomes that use the minecraft: name (Pale Garden and sulfur caves). The tables are built from the pack's data files and configs, not from a play session; see Notes.
Totals by dimension#
| Dimension | Vanilla | Modded | Total | Modded sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overworld | 53 | 161 | 214 | Terralith 95, Oh The Biomes We've Gone 54, Climate Rivers 3, Galosphere 3, YUNG's Cave Biomes 2, Clutter 2, Vanilla Backport 2 |
| Nether | 5 | 30 | 35 | Better Nether 22, Incendium 8 |
| End | 5 | 28 | 33 | Better End 25, Nullscape 3 |
| The Aether | 0 | 4 | 4 | Aether 4 |
| The Otherside | 0 | 4 | 4 | Deeper and Darker 4 |
| Eternal Starlight | 0 | 23 | 23 | Eternal Starlight 23 |
| The Twilight Forest | 0 | 22 | 22 | Twilight Forest 22 |
| Astral Dimension (10) and Setback (8) | 0 | 18 | 18 | Astral Dimension 18 |
| Total | 63 | 290 | 353 |
Useful sub-totals: the Overworld has 214 biomes (over 210), the Nether 35, the End 33, and the six extra dimensions together 71 (4 + 4 + 23 + 22 + 18). The pack registers 356 biomes in all; the other three are the vanilla the_void, a technical TerraBlender placeholder and the one biome the pack turns off.
The Overworld#
The Overworld mixes three layers: vanilla biomes,
Terralith and
Oh The Biomes We've Gone. Smaller mods add rivers, caves and a few special biomes. How they are combined is explained on World Generation.
| Mod | Biomes | Examples and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | 53 | The complete vanilla Overworld list |
| Terralith | 95 | Includes 11 cave biomes and 4 sky-island biomes (Skylands) |
| Oh The Biomes We've Gone | 54 | 55 are registered; one is switched off |
| Climate Rivers | 3 | Cold, lukewarm and warm river variants |
| Galosphere | 3 | Crystal canyons, lichen caves, pink salt caves |
| YUNG's Cave Biomes | 2 | Frosted caves, lost caves |
| Clutter | 2 | Giant redwood forest, lupine fields |
| Vanilla Backport | 2 | Pale Garden, sulfur caves |
Terralith supplies by far the biggest set. Its list of 95 biomes (plus 53 vanilla ids) is injected into the vanilla Overworld preset through
Lithostitched. All Terralith modules are on in Nytheria (Skylands, custom structures, terrain slabs). The pack turns off vanilla_stone_gen, which only affects underground stone blobs; see Caves, Ores & the Underground.
Oh The Biomes We've Gone registers 55 biomes through three
TerraBlender (Fabric) regions. The pack turns off exactly one of them, eroded_borealis (in config/biomeswevegone/world_generation.json), so 54 can generate. Its region weights are 3, 3 and 3. The same config keeps palm trees on beaches and four flower patch packs switched on.
The smaller sets:
Climate Rivers makes rivers depend on the climate, with three variants.
Galosphere and
YUNG's Cave Biomes (Fabric) add five underground biomes between them. YUNG's frosted caves form where it is cold and its lost caves where it is hot (its config sets a temperature window of -1.0 to -0.7 for Frosted and 0.55 to 1.0 for Lost).
Clutter adds two surface biomes and its own ores and geodes; all its generation switches are on.
Vanilla Backport adds the Pale Garden and sulfur caves; both switches are on.
Geophilic changes the look and features of 29 vanilla biomes without adding any, so it adds nothing to the count.
The Nether#
The Nether is a BetterX world with 35 biomes.
BetterNether: Remastered brings 22 and
Incendium brings 8. All 22 Better Nether biomes have rate 1.0 in its config, so none is rarer than the mod intends. Incendium's biomes join through the minecraft:is_nether tag, which the Better Nether biome source reads.
| Mod | Biomes | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | 5 | Nether wastes, crimson forest, warped forest, soul sand valley, basalt deltas |
| Better Nether Remastered | 22 | Includes edge and "cleared" variants and a terraced swampland |
| Incendium | 8 | Datapack-only; no config file |
The End#
The End has 33 biomes.
BetterEnd: Remastered adds 25: 19 surface biomes and 6 End cave biomes.
Nullscape adds 3 more, and the five vanilla End biomes stay. All 25 Better End biomes have rate 1.0.
| Mod | Biomes | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | 5 | The End, highlands, midlands, small End islands, barrens |
| Better End Remastered | 25 | 19 surface and 6 cave biomes |
| Nullscape | 3 | Taken in through the minecraft:is_end tag |
The six extra dimensions#
Each of these dimensions has its own biome source. The Otherside's four biomes are Deeplands, Echoing Forest, Blooming Caverns and Overcast Columns.
| Dimension | Mod | Biomes |
|---|---|---|
| Eternal Starlight | 23 | |
| The Twilight Forest | 22 | |
| Astral Dimension (10) and Setback (8) | 18 | |
| The Aether | 4 | |
| The Otherside | 4 |
The Astral Dimension is a NeoForge mod that runs through Sporran (Navrelis's fork of Kilt, from the Sporran Team). The Twilight Forest is a native Fabric port and does not use Sporran. Read more on Dimensions, The Twilight Forest and Eternal Starlight.
How each set gets into the world#
You never need this to play, but it explains why some mods add biomes while others only change them.
| Set | How it generates |
|---|---|
| Terralith | Lithostitched injects Terralith's list into the vanilla Overworld preset; Terralith's own dimension file is skipped because Lithostitched is installed |
| Oh The Biomes We've Gone | Three TerraBlender regions |
| YUNG's Cave Biomes, Clutter, Vanilla Backport | One TerraBlender region each |
| Climate Rivers, Galosphere | Tagged as Overworld biomes |
| Better Nether and Incendium | The BetterX Nether biome source reads the minecraft:is_nether tag and the Better Nether tag |
| Better End and Nullscape | The BetterX End biome source; Nullscape joins through the minecraft:is_end tag |
| Aether, Deeper and Darker, Eternal Starlight, Twilight Forest, Astral Dimension | Each dimension's own biome source |
Which number to use#
The count depends on what you include. These are the numbers that hold, each with its rule:
| What you count | Number |
|---|---|
| Biomes that can generate in a fresh world (vanilla and modded, all dimensions) | 353 |
| Modded biomes only | 290 |
| Biomes in the Overworld | 214 |
| Biomes in the six extra dimensions | 71 |
| Biome files the pack registers, vanilla included | 356 |
Two older figures need a note. "About 290 biomes" was correct as a count of modded biomes, and it still is. The old pages used it as a total, which it never was; the total is 353.
The ten biggest biome sets#
Counted by effective biomes per mod:
| # | Mod | Biomes | Dimension |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Terralith | 95 | Overworld |
| 2 | Oh The Biomes We've Gone | 54 | Overworld |
| 3 | Better End Remastered | 25 | End |
| 4 | Eternal Starlight | 23 | Eternal Starlight |
| 5 | The Twilight Forest | 22 | Twilight Forest |
| 6 | Better Nether Remastered | 22 | Nether |
| 7 | Astral Dimension | 18 | Astral Dimension and Setback |
| 8 | Incendium | 8 | Nether |
| 9 | The Aether | 4 | The Aether |
| 10 | Deeper and Darker | 4 | The Otherside |
Cave biomes#
22 of the 353 biomes are cave biomes: 11 from Terralith, 6 from Better End, 3 from Galosphere and 2 from YUNG's Cave Biomes. If you want only surface landscapes, these are the ones to subtract. Cave mods and the underground are covered on Caves, Ores & the Underground.
Snow, rivers and weather#
Snowy biomes get extra care.
Winter Overhaul adds winter features to them through code, and
Snow! Real Magic! ⛄ (Fabric) lets snow pile up in layers (up to 6) during snowstorms only; it melts naturally.
Simple Snowy Fix (Forge / Fabric) stops snow from generating on leaves. Rivers follow the climate through Climate Rivers. Colours blend smoothly between neighbouring biomes thanks to
Better Biome Reblend, a client mod. The sky and weather mods are covered on Atmosphere & Visuals.
Finding a biome#
Nature's Compass locates the nearest biome of a type. In Nytheria it needs no XP and never breaks. The recipe and settings are on World Generation. For what to expect in the other realms, see The Nether and The End.
In the quest book#
Chapters in Part 3 and Part 4 contain biome tasks: Ruins and Rumours in The Road asks for five biomes (mountain, badlands, jungle, savanna and taiga), and Stone That Remembers in The Deep asks for the Galosphere cave biomes (lichen caves, crystal canyons, pink salt caves).
Notes#
- The counts come from static reads of the pack's data files, configs and bytecode. The game was not launched for them.
- Nullscape's 3 End biomes and Better End's 25 are counted from configs, tags and code. Biomes of the Overworld, the Nether and Eternal Starlight were also confirmed in generated chunks; no End world was available for that check.
- Vanilla Backport's two biomes use vanilla names. If you leave them out of the modded count, it is 288 instead of 290. The pack's public wording keeps them in: "about 290 new biomes".
