The End portal in Nytheria does not open with Vanilla Eyes of Ender. The pack uses End Remastered, which replaces them with 16 different eye types, and the portal frame in a stronghold has 12 sockets. This page is a child of Bosses and lists every eye, where it comes from and how likely it is. It is for players who are ready to leave the Overworld for The End and the Ender Dragon.

How the portal works#

The short version: you need 12 eyes, they can be any 12 of the 16 types, and none of them is a Vanilla Eye of Ender. The frame is a ring of 12 frame blocks, three on each side of a square, with the four corners empty. The mod only checks that each of the 12 frame blocks holds an eye. It does not care which type, so you do not need one of every eye, and you can place the same type more than once.

The 16 in the pack's trailer is the number of eye types. The number of sockets is 12, the same as the 12 end_portal_frame blocks in the portal room of the pack's stronghold (YUNG's Better Strongholds).

A Vanilla Eye of Ender still appears as an ingredient in two recipes (Exotic Eye and Witch Eye, below). You cannot use it for anything else.

How to read this page#

The tables below group the 16 eyes by how you get them: from chests, from mobs, or by crafting, trading and enchanting. The columns are:

  • Eye: the item name in game.
  • Rarity: the rarity the mod's config gives it (common, rare or epic). It is a label, not a drop chance.
  • Where it comes from: the chest, mob, recipe or trade.
  • Chance or recipe: the weight of the loot entry against an empty entry, with one roll unless the table says otherwise. A 15 % chest entry means about one chest in seven carries the eye.
  • Quest: the quest in the chapter Sixteen Lanterns that asks for the eye.

By rarity, the pack has 6 common eyes (Old, Black, Lost, Cursed, Corrupted and Witch), 7 rare eyes (Rogue, Nether, Cold, Magical, Guardian, Exotic and Evil) and 3 epic eyes (Wither, Undead and Cryptic).

Eyes found in chests#

Eight eyes are loot. You find them by exploring the structures listed here and opening their chests. Chests are per-player in Nytheria, so every player in a group can find the eye in the same chest. See Per-Player Loot.

EyeRarityWhere it comes fromChance per chestQuest
Old EyecommonDesert temple chests15 %The Old Eye
Rogue EyerareJungle temple chests40 %The Rogue Eye
Nether EyerareNether fortress chests30 %The Nether Eye
Cold EyerareIgloo cellar chest70 %The Cold Eye
Black EyecommonBuried treasure chest30 %The Black Eye
Lost EyecommonAbandoned mineshaft chests, including the biome mineshafts of Repurposed Structures20 %The Lost Eye
Cursed EyecommonBastion treasure room70 %The Cursed Eye
Corrupted EyecommonPillager outpost chests, including the Dungeons and Taverns outposts30 %The Corrupted Eye

The igloo and bastion entries are the highest at 70 %. The Old Eye is the lowest at 15 %, so expect to open several desert temples.

Two things are not confirmed. The mod's jar also has extra loot tables for simple dungeons and shipwreck treasure that would add the Old Eye and Black Eye, but nobody has confirmed they are active, so do not plan around them. Several of the structures above are replaced by YUNG's versions in this pack, and the wiki has not tested whether the eye entries apply in each one.

Eyes from mobs and bosses#

Three eyes drop from a creature. Two of them need a fight you may not want early.

EyeRarityWhere it comes fromChanceQuest
Magical EyerareEvoker drop; woodland mansion chests5 % from the Evoker; 10 % per mansion chestThe Magical Eye
Wither EyeepicKilling the Wither2 rolls at 90 % eachThe Wither Eye
Guardian EyerareElder Guardian drop35 %The Guardian Eye

The Wither is a summoned boss with 300 HP and the Elder Guardian is a mini-boss in ocean monuments, so these two eyes ask for real preparation. The Wither Eye is the most generous of the three: two rolls at 90 % means you almost always get at least one. See Other Bosses & Mini-Bosses for both fights.

The Evoker drop is 5 %, so a woodland mansion chest at 10 % gives twice the odds per chest.

Eyes you craft, trade for or enchant#

The last five eyes have no chest. Each has its own route.

EyeRarityHow you get itDetailsQuest
Exotic EyerareShaped crafting, 3 x 3Bubble, fire, horn and tube coral, 2 conduits, 2 glow ink sacs and an Eye of EnderThe Exotic Eye
Evil EyerareTradeA master-level cleric (profession level 5) or a wandering trader; you pay a rabbit's foot and 6 to 9 emeraldsThe Evil Eye
Undead EyeepicCraftingAn Undead Soul with bone, rotten flesh, ghast tear and phantom membrane. The Soul drops from a skeleton horse with 25 %The Undead Eye
Cryptic EyeepicEnchantingEach enchant has about a 1 in 120 chance to give you oneThe Cryptic Eye
Witch EyecommonShapeless craftingA Witch Pupil with an Eye of Ender. The Pupil drops from a witch with 10 %The Witch Eye

The Cryptic Eye is the slow one. The quest for it asks for 24 enchants, which at 1 in 120 per enchant is a matter of luck. See Enchanting & Anvils for how enchanting works in the pack.

The Evil Eye has two sources: a wandering trader, or a cleric villager who has reached master level (profession level 5).

The Undead and Witch Eyes both go through an intermediate item. Neither the Undead Soul nor the Witch Pupil is an eye, so they do not fit in a frame.

Following an eye to the stronghold#

The quest The Stair in the Floor tells you to throw an eye and follow it to the stronghold. Throw it, walk where it flies, and repeat. A thrown eye breaks 10 % of the time, so bring spares. The stronghold has the portal room with the 12 empty frames.

In the quest book#

The chapter Sixteen Lanterns in Part 8, The Far Shore, is the hunt for the eyes. It has 21 quests, two of them hidden and 19 required. It opens when you finish Nine Days, Wearing It, the last gate quest of Below the Bedrock in Part 7. It opens at the same time as the chapters The Far Shore and Past the Last Island, so you can work on all three together.

The chapter opens with A List of Sixteen. It has one quest per eye type that names the structure, mob or stat the eye comes from, plus The Stair in the Floor. The capstone, The Nine She Lit, is done by entering the End. Each eye quest pays an item and one Traveller's Cache roll. The capstone pays a soul lantern, an Ashfall Cache roll, 5 XP levels and 2 embers. Across the chapter you get 28 XP levels and 2 embers.

For the dragon and what follows, read Part 8.

Notes#

  • The sources agree that the portal has 12 sockets and the mod has 16 eye types. The quest summary says the capstone "needs all 17", but the capstone's own tasks are only the End-entry advancement, so this page does not repeat that figure. Where the 17 comes from has not been traced.
  • The Corrupted Eye config file was edited on 2026-10-01 to add the Dungeons and Taverns pillager outposts. The jar alone only lists the vanilla outposts.
  • Chances on this page are loot-table weights read from the mod's data. They have not been measured in play.
