Caves, Ores & the Underground
How caves, cave biomes and ores work in Nytheria - YUNG's Better Caves, Galosphere, Terralith caves, new ores in every dimension, underground campsites and what the pack changes for miners.
Underground, Nytheria changes three things: the shape of the caves, the biomes inside them and the ores you dig up. This page belongs to World Generation and covers the cave mods, the cave biomes, the ore changes in every dimension and a few underground structures that matter to miners.
Overview#
Several mods share the underground.
YUNG's Better Caves (Fabric) replaces the vanilla cave carvers.
Terralith,
Galosphere and
YUNG's Cave Biomes (Fabric) add cave biomes. Many other mods add ores, and the dimension mods bring their own ore sets. The pack makes no config change that disables an ore; the only ore switches that exist are those of Clutter and Ecologics, and both are on.
Counting cave biomes: 22 of the 353 biomes are cave biomes. They are 11 from Terralith, 6 from Better End (End caves), 3 from Galosphere and 2 from YUNG's Cave Biomes. The full biome counts are on Biomes.
Cave generation#
YUNG's Better Caves (Fabric) replaces the cave carvers with its own two configured carvers, so Overworld caves look different from vanilla. It also sets up liquid regions near the bottom of the world. Its pack config values are:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Liquid region size (Overworld) | 0.001 |
| Water region spawn chance | 40.0 |
| Liquid altitude | Y -55 |
Terralith also touches caves. It lowers the canyon carver probability from 0.01 to 0.003, so ravines and canyons are rarer than in vanilla. Its cave biome set adds 11 cave biomes, and Terralith's fungal caves carry an extra coal ore feature (ore_coal_extra).
Cave biomes#
| Mod | Biomes | What you find |
|---|---|---|
| Terralith | 11 | A set of cave biomes (part of its 95) |
| Galosphere | 3 | Crystal canyons, lichen caves, pink salt caves |
| YUNG's Cave Biomes | 2 | Frosted caves and lost caves |
| Better End Remastered | 6 | End caves (End only) |
Galosphere also adds palladium ore (large and small veins). The Part 4 quest chapter Stone That Remembers sends you to its biomes.
YUNG's Cave Biomes adds the frosted and lost caves, and it modifies the vanilla dripstone caves. Sandstorms are on (enableSandstorms true). A sandstorm lasts 120 to 600 ticks, which is 6 to 30 seconds, with a gap of 1,200 to 2,400 ticks (1 to 2 minutes) between storms. The frosted caves need cold areas (temperature -1.0 to -0.7) and the lost caves hot ones (0.55 to 1.0).
Ores in the Overworld and Nether#
The pack changes vanilla ores in a few places.
| Source | Change | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Terralith | No granite, diorite or andesite blobs (its vanilla_stone_gen option is off) | Overworld |
| Let's Do Meadow | Vanilla coal, emerald, gold, iron and lapis ore also generate as alpine variants in limestone; adds limestone and salt ores | Overworld |
| Clutter | Silver ore (surface and in redwood forests); basalt and blackstone sulphur ores | Overworld; Nether |
| Galosphere | Palladium ore, large and small | Overworld |
| Dusty Decorations | Marine fossil ores, buried and normal | Overworld |
| Ecologics | A nether gold ore vein | Nether |
| Incendium | Overrides the vanilla Nether ore features (gold, quartz, ancient debris small and large, magma, gravel, soul sand, blackstone) | Nether |
| Better Nether Remastered | Cincinnasite, nether lapis, nether redstone and nether ruby (four variants) | Nether |
The Terralith change matters for builders who like granite, diorite or andesite: you find these blocks only in structures, in other mods' worldgen or by crafting. The pack does not restore them. (Terralith's enable.vanilla_stone_gen folder would restore them; the pack does not use it.)
Ores in the End and the other dimensions#
| Dimension | Mod | New ores |
|---|---|---|
| The End | Better End Remastered | Thallasium, amber, ender ore, dragon bone ore |
| The Aether | The Aether | Ambrosium, zanite, gravitite, icestone |
| The Otherside | Deeper and Darker | Gloomslate and sculk ore sets |
| Eternal Starlight | Eternal Starlight | 20 ore features, including starlit diamond, deepsilver, malarite, saltpeter, dimslag and starcore |
| The Twilight Forest | The Twilight Forest | Legacy vanilla-style ores and oreberry bushes |
| Astral Dimension | Astral Dimension | Astral coal, astral gold, astranite, harsh diamond, harsh void ore, void ore |
If you want to see where a given ore generates,
EMI Ores adds ore generation information to the EMI recipe viewer, according to the mod's description.
How deep each dimension goes#
Each dimension has its own height range, which matters when you dig for ores. "Height" is the total number of blocks from the lowest level up.
| Dimension | Lowest Y | Height (blocks) |
|---|---|---|
| Overworld | -64 | 384 |
| Nether | 0 | 256 |
| The End (vanilla type) | 0 | 256 |
| The Aether | 0 | 256 |
| The Otherside | 0 | 128 |
| Eternal Starlight | -64 | 384 |
| The Twilight Forest | -32 | 288 |
| Astral Dimension | -64 | 384 |
| Setback | 32 | 384 |
The End row follows the vanilla dimension type. The Nullscape mod ships a taller End type (height 384), but it has not been checked whether it applies together with BetterX, so the table gives the vanilla values.
Underground structures#
Some structures matter more to miners than to explorers.
- Artifacts campsites.
Artifacts Remastered generates underground campsites with 40 attempts per chunk between Y -60 and Y 40. Their chests can be mimics (mimicChance 0.3). The pack uses modded chests in them and does not use the minimalist campsite option. - Mineshafts.
YUNG's Better Mineshafts (Fabric) replaces the vanilla mineshafts. They generate between Y -55 and Y 30 and carry ore props, with values cobble 50, coal 20, iron 9, redstone 7, gold 7, lapis 3, emerald 3 and diamond 1. - Dungeons.
YUNG's Better Dungeons (Fabric) removes the vanilla monster rooms and puts its own small dungeons in their place; its ore props are on. - Strongholds.
YUNG's Better Strongholds (Fabric) adds ore props to its rooms. Its End portal frames never come pre-filled (filledPortalFrameChance 0.0); you must use the End Remastered eyes, which are explained on The End Portal & the 16 Eyes.
More on all of these is on Structures & Dungeons.
In the quest book#
The Part 4 chapter Stone That Remembers is the book's cave chapter. Its visible quests ask for raw copper, amethyst shards and deepslate, a first diamond, the Galosphere biomes, a pink-salt shrine, 4 palladium ingots and an echo bell. The next chapter, The City That Listens, takes you into the Deep Dark and the Ancient City. See The Deep.
Tips#
- Bring a light source and a way back. Sandstorms are on in YUNG's cave biomes.
- Check for mimics in underground campsites before you open the loot chest.
- Do not count on granite, diorite or andesite from mining.
- The Otherside portal needs a Heart of the Deep, which Wardens always drop in this pack (
addWardenDrops true); see The Otherside.
