Fighting in Nytheria is a swing system with a large weapon catalogue on top. This page is part of Combat & Gear and covers how swings, combos and dual wielding work, how Simply Swords weapons are crafted, upgraded and found, and which settings the pack changes.

Overview#

Better Combat [Fabric & Forge] replaces the single vanilla hit with an animated swing for each weapon type, and Simply Swords [Fabric & Forge] supplies most of the weapons. The pack does not change any weapon recipe, so crafting and smithing are exactly what the mods define.

Three small mods tune the feel. Cut Through lets a swing pass through grass and other transparent blocks to reach a mob, Skeleton AI Fix makes skeletons strafe less and shoot faster when you are close, and the MmmMmmMmmMmm (Target Dummy) shows your hit damage and damage per second, which helps when you compare weapons.

Better Combat: swings and combos#

Better Combat gives every weapon an animated swing that hits all targets in an arc. Swings chain into combos, and a combo resets when you stop attacking for three times the weapon's cooldown. Attacks start fast, because the pack sets the upswing multiplier to 0.5, and fast attacks apply reduced knockback.

SettingValueWhat it means for you
Movement while attackingx0.5You move at half speed during a swing, smoothly, and not while mounted
Vanilla sweepingOffThe vanilla sweep attack is disabled
Reworked sweepingOnEach extra target a swing hits weakens it; the floor is reached at 4 extra targets
Maximum sweeping penalty-50 % damageThe lowest damage a sweeping swing can drop to
Combo reset3.0 x cooldownIdle this long and the combo starts over
Attacking through wallsOffA swing does not hit what is behind a wall

Sweeping sound and particles play only for swords. A sword still cleaves several mobs at once, but each extra target costs the swing some force.

Who a wide swing can hurt#

A swing in an arc could hit things you did not mean to hit, so Better Combat sorts every entity into one of three groups.

GroupHit by the arc?Examples
HostileYes, anything in the arcAll hostile mobs, everything undead, every entity that is not listed elsewhere
NeutralOnly if you aim at itPlayers, villagers, iron golems, wandering traders, both Goblin Traders, snow golems, copper and tuff golems, clay golems, passive animals, your own pets and teammates
FriendlyNeverAllay

Client defaults#

The pack leaves the mod's client defaults on: hold the attack button to keep swinging, mine with weapons, swing through grass (not through Farmer's Delight blocks), attack instead of mining when enemies are close, a red crosshair highlight, weapon trails, and attack range in tooltips. Arms in first person are off. The pack binds no Better Combat keys, so Feint and "Toggle Mine with Weapons" have no default key.

Dual wielding#

You can hold a one-handed weapon in each hand. Dual wielding raises your attack speed by 20 % (x1.2), and both hands deal full damage. Whether a weapon can be dual-wielded is data-driven, and a two-handed weapon leaves the off-hand empty.

HandsBetter Combat typesSimply Swords types
One-handed (can be dual-wielded)sword, axe, claw, coral blade, cutlass, fist, mace, pickaxe, rapier, sickle, wand, dagger, lance, tridentchakram, cutlass, longsword, rapier, sai, spear, warglaive
Two-handedanchor, battlestaff, claymore, double axe, heavy axe, glaive, halberd, hammer, katana, scythe, soul knife, staff, spear, twin blade, two-handed bows and crossbowsclaymore, glaive, greataxe, greathammer, halberd, katana, twinblade

The Simply Swords scythe has no attribute file of its own and falls back to the Better Combat scythe, which is two-handed. Items from other mods that lack an attribute file get a preset from their item name (for example anything called claymore, dagger or rapier), so most modded weapons swing correctly without extra setup.

Simply Swords#

Simply Swords adds 75 standard weapons and 58 unique weapons. The standard weapons come in 15 types and five materials: iron, gold, diamond, netherite and runic. The 15 types are chakram, claymore, cutlass, glaive, greataxe, greathammer, halberd, katana, longsword, rapier, sai, scythe, spear, twinblade and warglaive.

Stats#

The pack keeps the mod's default weapon stats. The type decides the base damage and speed, so a heavy type hits harder and swings slower.

TypeDamage modifierAttack speed modifier
Greathammer+4.0-3.2
Greataxe+3.0-3.1
Claymore+2.0-2.8
Longsword0-2.4
Katana0-2.0
Rapier-1.0-1.8
Sai-3.0-1.5
Chakram-1.0-3.0

Crafting and upgrading#

  • Iron, gold and diamond: crafted at a crafting table.
  • Netherite: smithing. Combine the diamond version, a netherite ingot and a netherite upgrade template.
  • Runic: smithing. Put a netherite weapon in the base slot, a Diamond in the addition slot and a Runic Tablet in the template slot. The result is an unidentified runic weapon; click it to reveal its power.
  • Reroll: use the same recipe with the runic weapon as the base to roll a new power.
  • Repair: runic weapons are repaired with netherite ingots. They always run at full strength, and some powers can roll the "Greater" prefix.

You can also craft a Sword on a Stick from an iron longsword, string and a stick.

Unique weapons#

Unique weapons cannot be crafted. The mod places them in chests as loot, and 40 of the 58 are lootable. The other 18 are progression forms or special pickups, such as the Waking and Awakened Lichblade, the Ionbound and Awakened Stormscale forms and the relics.

The pack sets these loot chances, on the mod's scale where 100 means 100 %:

LootChance value
Standard weapons (iron, gold)0.1
Rare weapons (diamond)0.4
Runic weapons (Runic Tablet)0.7
Unique weapons0.05

A pity counter makes sure you do not go empty-handed forever. It is counted per region of 2x2 chunks of chests. After 25 credited misses the unique chance rises by 0.2 percentage points per miss, and after 75 the next eligible chest guarantees a unique weapon. A Runic Tablet is guaranteed after 60 misses.

Where the loot comes from is also tuned. The Ender Dragon can drop a unique weapon (override 5.0), while ruined portal chests and all 16 village chest tables are set to 0.0, so those chests never hold Simply Swords loot.

Awakening and the Runic Forge#

A unique weapon found as loot starts at Awakening level 0. At the Runic Forge you feed it Runic Tablets to raise it up to level 8. By default it starts with 50 % of its full damage and 75 % of its full attack speed, and its unique ability stays sealed until level 4. Gem effectiveness also grows with the level. Hold Alt over a tooltip for details. The Lichblade and Dormant Relic families have their own persistent forms.

Craft the Runic Forge in this pattern: top row gold ingot, obsidian, gold ingot; middle row amethyst shard, smithing table, amethyst shard; bottom row gold ingot, Runic Tablet, gold ingot. Place a weapon in the top centre slot and the forge shows its tablets and gems in editor slots: eight for tablets, one for a Runefused gem and one for a Netherfused gem.

Gems#

Smelting a unique weapon (1,000 ticks, 50 seconds, 35 XP) or a gem (500 ticks, 25 seconds) gives an Empowered Remnant. A smithing table turns it into a gem: Runic Tablet as template, Empowered Remnant as base, and Crying Obsidian for a Runefused Gem or a Netherite Ingot for a Netherfused Gem. Unique weapons have both socket types. A Contained Remnant is crafted from 3 Empowered Remnants, 4 iron ingots and 2 glass, and changes form while you carry it.

Abilities#

Unique weapons and gems have active abilities. They never target passive mobs, armor stands or villagers, and vanilla teams and Open Parties and Claims parties protect their members from your abilities. Enchantments such as Sharpness raise ability damage. Mobs holding these weapons use the ability with a 50 % chance every 4 seconds (80 ticks), at half ability damage, and ability damage against players is halved as well.

The abilities use the "Use Mainhand Weapon Ability" and "Use Offhand Weapon Ability" controls. Both are unbound in the pack, and while unbound the ability fires on a normal right click.

How it fits together#

A practical weapon path follows the recipes. Start with iron or diamond Simply Swords, move to netherite once you have a template, then take a netherite weapon to a Runic Tablet for a runic version. Unique weapons are a parallel branch that you find, not craft, and the Runic Forge makes them stronger the more tablets you feed it. For the armor that goes with them see Armor & Accessories; for the fights themselves see Bosses.

In the quest book#

Forge and Gauntlet in Part 5, The Burning Road, asks you to forge a runic weapon from a Runic Tablet. Three Locked Dungeons in Part 6, The Sky Above, asks for a flaming sword and a valkyrie lance from the Aether. Deep Road and Ashfall Cache rewards can also roll a runefused gem.
