Death, Graves & Respawning
What happens when you die in Nytheria: grave rules, how to get your items back, where beds and respawn anchors work, the death penalty and how Boss Ultimatum punishes boss deaths.
When you die in Nytheria, a grave keeps your items and experience until you collect them. This page, a child of Getting Started, explains the grave rules, which dimensions let you respawn at a bed or an anchor, what the death penalty does and how to find your way back. <!-- src: GWS §3.6, §3.8; CQ §2.6; W §1.5 -->
How it works#
The mod
You're in Grave Danger creates a grave block where you died. It stores your items and your experience, and it tells you the location in chat. Nothing is lost on death and no special item is needed to get a grave. <!-- src: GWS §3.6 first bullet (storeItems, storeXp, requireItem false, informGraveLocation); CQ §2.6 -->
You collect a grave by right clicking it. Your items go back into your inventory and identical stacks merge. A grave has no time-out, so it stays as long as the world does. <!-- src: GWS §3.6 (retrieveMethods.onClick, dropOnRetrieve IN_INVENTORY, mergeStacksOnRetrieve, graveTimeout.enabled false) -->
The grave sits on a block that depends on where you died: cobblestone in the Overworld, soul soil in the Nether and end stone in the End. A grave glows when you are within 15 blocks of it. <!-- src: GWS §3.6 (blockUnderGrave); CQ §2.6 (glowingDistance 15) -->
Contents of Accessories, Trinkets, Levelz and Traveler's Backpack also go into the grave. Soulbound items stay with you. <!-- src: GWS §3.6 second bullet; CQ §2.6 (enableSoulbound) -->
Numbers and settings in Nytheria#
| Setting | Value | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Grave stores | Items and experience | You lose neither |
| How to collect | Right click the grave | Nothing else triggers it |
| Item needed | None | No key, shovel or special item is required |
| Time-out | None | The grave stays |
| Robbing by other players | After 24 hours | Collect it on the same day |
| Grave glows | Within 15 blocks | Easier to spot |
| Lowest Y for generating a grave | Overworld -60; Nether, End and other dimensions 3 | Graves are not generated below these heights |
| Grave backups kept per player | 100 | Old graves can be restored by an operator |
| Hunger on respawn | Reset | You come back fed |
| Item loss on death | Off | No random item loss |
The mod also hands you a Grave Compass on respawn. It is used up when you use it. Whether the compass is really handed out has not been tested in play. <!-- src: CQ §2.6 (graveCompass.receiveOnRespawn true, consumeOnUse true); GWS §3.6 and Unverified 9 (not tested) -->
Where you respawn#
You respawn at your bed, at a respawn anchor you charged, or at the world spawn. Which of these works depends on the dimension you are in. <!-- src: W §1.5 -->
| Dimension | Beds work | Respawn anchor works |
|---|---|---|
| Overworld | Yes | No |
| Nether | No | Yes |
| End | No | No |
| The Aether | Yes | No |
| The Otherside | Yes | No |
| Eternal Starlight | Yes | Yes |
| The Twilight Forest | Yes | No |
| Astral Dimension | No | Yes |
| Setback | No | No |
So a respawn anchor does not work in the Overworld. Anchors work in the Nether, Eternal Starlight and the Astral Dimension only. Beds work in the Overworld, the Aether, the Otherside, Eternal Starlight and the Twilight Forest. <!-- src: W §1.5; IA §8 #1 -->
You can sleep from tick 11,500 on, which is earlier than vanilla, thanks to
Early Bedtime. <!-- src: CQ §2.6 (Allowed Sleep Time = 11500) -->
Step by step#
- Look at the chat. The grave location was announced there when you died. <!-- src: GWS §3.6 (informGraveLocation) -->
- Open the world map with M.
Xaero's Minimap sets a death waypoint and removes it when you walk within four blocks of it. <!-- src: GWS §1.2 (deathpoints, delete_reached_deathpoints) --> - Type
/yigd latestto see your latest uncollected grave, or/yigd graveto see your graves. <!-- src: GWS §4.1 --> - If you need to go back quickly, type
/back. It returns you to your previous position, which also works after a death, with a 30-second cooldown and a three-second warm-up. <!-- src: GWS §2.2 (/back), §3.6 commands --> - Collect the grave by right clicking it. <!-- src: GWS §3.6 -->
Trips between waystones cost experience points, and after a death your experience is in the grave. Scrolls and warp plates are free, so they are the safer way back. See Waystones. <!-- src: GWS §2.1 costs (scrolls and plates free); GWS §3.6 (storeXp) -->
The death penalty#
Every death except a death caused by another player or by a command starts a penalty from
Player Difficulty. The penalty gives you 50 % more hunger exhaustion for 5 active minutes and 30 % less damage dealt for 5 minutes of fighting. Deaths within 15 minutes stack up to level 3, and each extra level adds 0.25 to the hunger factor and takes another 5 % off your damage. <!-- src: GC §1 Player Difficulty (Deaths) -->
Your multiplier is personal, from 1.00x up to a cap of 2.50x, and a lower multiplier makes the penalty weaker. /scaling shows your own breakdown. <!-- src: GC §1 Player Difficulty; GWS §3.7 -->
Boss deaths and Boss Ultimatum#
Some bosses punish players who die to them.
Boss Ultimatum (Modpack Utils Series) covers 15 bosses: the four Bosses of Mass Destruction bosses, the Ender Dragon, the Wither, the Valkyrie Queen, the Sun Spirit, the Slider, The Eye, the Blackstone Golem, the Soul Reaper, the Piglin Beast, the Stalker and the Invoker. <!-- src: BM §2.10 -->
Only kills that the boss makes itself count. From the third player it kills, every further player death restores the boss to half of its maximum health. The Ender Dragon instead heals a flat 120 HP per player kill from its second. <!-- src: BM §2.10 (direct_kill, 3rd kill 50 %, dragon 2nd kill 120 HP) -->
The Cataclysm, Twilight Forest, Astral Dimension and Eternal Starlight bosses and the vanilla Warden and Elder Guardian are not covered. <!-- src: BM §2.10 -->
Tips#
- Open the grave first and keep fighting second. Your items are in the grave, not on the ground, so there is no despawn timer. <!-- src: GWS §3.6 -->
- Put a bed or an anchor where you will need it. A bed in the Nether does not set your respawn there, and a respawn anchor does not set it in the Overworld. <!-- src: W §1.5 -->
- If you die inside a claim where graves cannot be placed, your items may drop normally. In your own claim they go into a grave. How "own claim" works with parties was not tested. <!-- src: GWS §3.6 (standardDropRuleInClaim DROP, OwnClaim PUT_IN_GRAVE), Unverified 9 -->
- Carry food for the minutes after respawning, because the penalty makes you hungrier. <!-- src: GC §1 Player Difficulty penalty -->
Charm of Undying (Fabric/Forge/Quilt) lets a Totem of Undying work as an accessory. <!-- src: CQ §2.6 -->- Learn a boss before you repeat a fight. Boss Ultimatum counts only the deaths a boss causes itself, so a death to fall damage or another mob does not strengthen it. <!-- src: BM §2.10 (direct_kill true) -->
Changed from the old wiki#
Earlier versions of this wiki said that respawn anchors work in the Overworld. In the current pack they do not work there; they work in the Nether, Eternal Starlight and the Astral Dimension. <!-- src: W Changed #7; IA §8 #1 -->
