Part 1, The Journal, is the first part of the quest book. It has 3 chapters and 32 quests: the prologue One Leaf, the first-night chapter First Fire and the travel chapter The Marked Road. One Leaf is open from the start. Finishing its quest Under the Spruce opens First Fire, The Marked Road, the five Hearth and Home chapters and Titans of Nytheria, and Where She Went, the last quest of The Marked Road, opens Part 3.

Counts: quests per chapter are from the book's data. "Optional" means a visible optional quest; hidden quests are counted separately. Rewards are claimed by hand, as described on Rewards, Loot Caches & Choice Kits.

Order and pacing#

Play One Leaf first, on your first night. After Under the Spruce, First Fire and The Marked Road can be played in any order and side by side, and the five chapters of Part 2 open at the same moment. Only Where She Went in The Marked Road is needed to open Part 3, so you can leave the rest of First Fire for later.

The tasks in this part are mostly item tasks (gather and hold the items). The rest are a few statistics (walking and the shield), one advancement, one kill task, one look-at task, one structure task, checkmarks and the QuestBridge story tasks of the prologue. First Fire has 23 tasks in 15 quests, The Marked Road 19 tasks in 13 quests and One Leaf 4 tasks in 4 quests.

One Leaf#

Torn out. Two words and half a sentence.

One Leaf is the prologue, played on your first night. It is the only chapter whose first quest has no dependency.

What you do#

  • Find Me is a checkmark quest: click it yourself to start.
  • A Fire and a Leaf asks you to light a campfire after dark with the torn leaf in your inventory. The fire answers with a direction and a number of paces.
  • Her Mark is optional. It checks that you pass the stack of stones on the way to the fallen spruce.
  • Under the Spruce is opening the chest under the fallen spruce, where the journal is.

The journal screen, the leaf and the walk are explained on The Journal, Embers & Torn Leaves.

What to bring#

Something to light a fire with and fuel for a campfire, plus food and torches for a walk of 120 to 260 blocks. The leaf arrives on its own.

Rewards#

Each of the three quests after Find Me pays 1 XP level, 3 levels in total. There are no items and no embers in this chapter.

First Fire#

Wood, stone, iron and a fire that stays lit.

First Fire is the classic first-night chapter. It opens when you finish Under the Spruce. Its first quest, Oiled Canvas, stays invisible until then.

What you do#

  • Collect 8 logs of any kind, then planks and a crafting table.
  • Craft a wooden sword, a stone pickaxe and 32 cobblestone.
  • Walk 500 blocks (Where You Woke), kill 5 zombies, smelt 3 iron ingots in a furnace and block 100 damage with a shield.
  • Place a campfire and look at it (Embers). This is a look-at task, so the quest has to be unlocked first for the look to count.
  • The First Warm Meal needs 3 foods and 4 coal. A minute beside a lit campfire after dark is an optional task for it.
  • The closing quest, The Journal Opens, asks for a compass and 8 paper.

Three hidden quests are waiting in this chapter; their number is all that is said here, and the spoiler section at the end of this page tells how to find them.

What to bring#

Stone tools and iron, coal, 3 foods, a shield, paper and the materials for a compass.

Rewards#

Sticks, saplings, torches, apples, coal, arrows, a bucket and 6 bread, plus 4 Kindling Cache rolls and 1 Traveller's Cache roll. The Embers quest gives your first ember. The closing quest gives a map, a cartography table, a Traveller's Cache roll, 3 levels and 1 ember.

Chapter totals: 11 XP levels, 2 embers, 5 loot rolls.

The Marked Road#

She left signs. Learn to read them.

The Marked Road is about travel and finding your way. It opens when you finish Under the Spruce. Its first quest, Stone on Stone, stays invisible until then. Its last quest, Where She Went, is the gate to Part 3.

What you do#

  • Walk 1,000 blocks and draw a map at a cartography table.
  • Place Waystones: first one, then two together with a bound scroll.
  • Craft a Sophisticated Backpack.
  • Get two leads and 8 bones, a saddle and a name tag, a spyglass, and a notice board with a writable book.
  • The closing quest, Where She Went, wants a Nature's Compass and 3,000 blocks walked.

Two hidden quests are in this chapter.

What to bring#

The materials for a backpack, two leads, a saddle, a name tag and a spyglass, a map, a writable book and a long path. The distance quests check the Minecraft walking statistic.

Rewards#

A Warp Stone, warp scrolls (4, then 8), paper, ink and Traveller's Cache rolls. Where She Went gives 8 warp scrolls, a Traveller's Cache roll, 3 levels and 1 ember.

Chapter totals: 8 XP levels, 2 embers, 6 loot rolls.

Tips for this part#

  • Do the prologue on your first night. The campfire has to be lit after dark.
  • Expect to walk. The book asks for 500, 1,000 and then 3,000 blocks across this part.
  • Place your first waystones near home; see Waystones for how they work.
  • Items are never consumed by quests, so keep your backpack, compass and tools.
  • Look-at quests only count once the quest is unlocked. If Embers does not react, finish the quests before it first.
  • Claim every reward by hand before you leave a chapter.
