The quest book pays five kinds of reward: XP levels, fixed items, rolls on a loot table, a choice of one item out of three, and embers. This page lists the reward types, how to claim them, the five loot caches (which also drop from mobs) and the 11 choice kits. It is a reference page: counts are for the whole book, 851 rewards on 440 quests.

How to read this page#

  • A reward is one entry in a quest's reward list. A quest can have several.
  • A roll is one draw on a reward table. You get one item from the table's weighted list.
  • A cache is a reward table that also exists as an item you can find. Chances for caches are exact, calculated from the book's weights.
  • Levels are XP levels, not points. Embers are the currency of the journal.

Reward types#

414 of the 440 quests pay something. The 26 that pay nothing are chapter openers, the first quest of 26 of the 27 chapters.

TypeCountNotes
XP levels317317 quests give levels, 806 levels in total. A single reward is 1 to 10 levels. Titans of Nytheria alone pays 80 over its chapter.
Loot roll277269 quests have at least one. Split: 99 Traveller's Cache, 83 Lamplighter's Cache, 60 Ashfall Cache, 21 Kindling Cache, 14 Deep Road Cache.
Fixed item207Food, torches, tools, scrolls, a diamond on nine boss quests, and keepsake copies of boss drops in Titans of Nytheria.
Choice12Pick one item out of three from a kit. 11 different kits.
Embers38The reward adds embers to the claiming player's wallet. 64 embers in total.

The largest single reward you meet in the main road is 10 levels, from The Sun Spirit. The highest chapter total is Titans of Nytheria with 80 levels, because it pays 4 levels for each of its 16 optional boss-drop quests.

Claiming rewards#

Rewards are not paid out automatically. Open the quest and click each reward. The pack does not use team rewards, so each member of a team claims their own copy, and embers go to the player who claims.

Items you hand in are not consumed, so the food and tools you use for one quest stay in your inventory for the next. Rewards are per player, while the quest progress is per team. See Multiplayer for team basics.

Loot caches#

Five reward tables are also loot caches: items named after the table that mobs can drop. Opening a cache with a right click gives one reward from the table. Sneak and right-click to open the whole stack at once. The quests themselves roll the same tables as rewards.

CacheDrops fromChance per killMain contents
Kindling CacheHostile mobs and passive animals0.90 % hostile, 0.30 % passivetorches, bread, planks, coal, cooked beef, iron nuggets, a bucket, compost, candles, a map, a candle holder, an Ember Coin
Traveller's CacheHostile mobs0.60 %iron ingots, emeralds, warp scrolls, glass, leather, golden carrots, lapis, Tide lucky bait, lanterns, an enchanted book, 3 diamonds, glow flares, a torn leaf (A Page, Torn)
Lamplighter's CacheBosses32 %8 diamonds, 2 netherite scrap, an enchanted book, 16 emeralds, allurite, resonarium, ambrosium, warp scrolls, a globe, 32 blaze powder, experience bottles, a torn leaf
Deep Road CacheBosses20 %netherite scrap, 6 diamonds, palladium, resonarium, zanite, nether rubies, opal, a netherite upgrade template, bottles o' enchanting, crystal fruit, a runefused gem, night vision goggles, a torn leaf, an Ember Coin
Ashfall CacheBosses8 %2 netherite ingots, terminite, deepsilver, starlit diamonds, a life shard, shulker shells, resonarium plates, 64 firework rockets, a sterling helmet, a runefused gem, an enchanted golden apple, an Ember Coin

Together the caches give these chances for each kill:

KillChance of a cache
Hostile mob1.5 % (about 1 in 67)
Passive animal0.3 %
Any boss60 % (no cache on 40 % of boss kills)

The chances come from the book's weights: a boss class has a total weight of 15 plus a "no cache" weight of 10, which makes 60 % for the three boss caches together. The same idea gives the 1.5 % for hostile mobs (a total of 60 against 3,940 for "no cache") and 0.3 % for passive animals (12 against 3,988).

Ember Coins and torn leaves#

An Ember Coin is a gold nugget named Ember Coin, with the line "Spend it on nothing. Carry it anyway." Carried in your inventory it is absorbed into your ember wallet, which holds up to 999. A Page, Torn is a named piece of paper: a torn leaf of the story. It is the same item that loot chests give, and using it pastes it into the journal. Both are covered on The Journal, Embers & Torn Leaves.

Choice kits#

Some quests let you pick one of three items from a kit. There are 12 choice rewards from 11 kits; the Cook's Bundle is used by two quests.

Notable fixed rewards#

  • Boss diamonds. Nine boss quests give a diamond on top of a Deep Road Cache roll: Night Vanquisher, A Flower in the Dark, Do Not Wake It (also 2 echo shards and 1 ember), The Wither (1 ember), Blackstone Golem, Through the Gauntlet, The Slider, The Valkyrie Queen and The Sun Spirit (1 ember, 10 levels).
  • Travel supplies. A Warp Stone (Her Lamps), several batches of warp scrolls, a map and a cartography table (The Journal Opens), 2 golden parachutes (Above the Sky) and 64 firework rockets (Wings).
  • Keepsakes. Cornflowers on some story quests. The quests of Titans of Nytheria give a copy of each boss drop, such as void thorn, ancient anima, soul star, obsidian heart and prime eye.

Rewards by chapter#

The table covers Parts 1 to 10 and shows the totals the book pays per chapter. Loot rolls are rolls on caches, not found items.

Notes#

  • Most quests of Parts 8 and 9 give Ashfall Cache rolls. The early chapters mostly roll the Kindling and Traveller's caches.
  • Almost all of the Hearth and Home quests are optional, but they still pay: caches, food and a choice kit for each chapter's capstone.
  • The pack sets automatic reward claiming to disabled for every quest.
