Chapters in the quest book do not all start open. Every chapter except One Leaf starts behind a quest in another chapter, and a chain of gate quests carries you from the prologue to the late game. This page lists every link in that chain, what each gate asks of you and what it unlocks.

The book runs in flexible mode: work you do early counts, but a locked quest completes only after the quests in front of it. The links below were read from every dependency list in the book's data.

How to read this page#

  • A gate quest is the one quest that opens the next chapter or part. The rest of a chapter hangs from its opening quest.
  • "Unlocked by" names the chapter and the quest you must have completed. Part and chapter names are those of the book.
  • A quest title in italics is a quest, a bold title is a chapter.

The title nearly is written in lowercase, but it is a normal, visible quest. It is the required capstone of Forge, Garden and Frost.

What each gate asks for#

Most gates are the closing quest of their chapter. The Sun Spirit is the exception: it is the dungeon boss in the middle of Three Locked Dungeons, and the chapter's last quest is Life Shards.

The book has an eleventh, hidden part that appears when you reach it. This wiki does not describe it.

What the chain means for you#

The chain is thin on purpose: only one quest of each part opens the next. You can move on without finishing the other chapters of the part you are in. For example, you can reach the Nether without finishing Stone That Remembers, and you can reach the End without the Aether's Gravitite.

Read the chain as a rough order of the pack itself:

  • The Burning Road waits for the Warden's heart.
  • The Sky Above waits for the Nether's runic blade.
  • The Listening Dark waits for the Sun Spirit.
  • The Far Shore, the End, waits for a full set of warden armor.

Hearth and Home and Titans of Nytheria are side branches. They only need the journal, so you can open them as soon as you complete Under the Spruce and visit them whenever you like. Only 296 of the 440 quests are required, and one chapter capstone per part is enough to open the next part.

Gates and the story#

The same gates drive the story in the journal. The bond with the traveller rises one level at Under the Spruce (level 1), Where She Went (level 2), A Blade Worth the Trip (level 3) and Stores for the Dark (level 4). Dimensions are added to the journal's list of fires by the quests Through (the Nether), Above the Sky (the Aether), Below the Bedrock (the Otherside), Through the Floor (the End) and The Gate Opens (Eternal Starlight). See The Journal, Embers & Torn Leaves.

Notes#

  • The book does not lock dimensions. The Nether, the Aether, the Otherside, the End and Eternal Starlight have their own entry recipes and requirements. The book only decides which chapters you can complete. See Progression Route.
  • Early work counts. If you build a portal ahead of the book, the dimension quests that wait for it still count the visit.
  • Look-at quests are stricter. Ten quests use a look-at task. Looking at a campfire, lantern or creature does not count while its quest is locked, so unlock the quest first.
  • Hidden does not mean gated. Hidden quests are about discovery. Gates are about order. See Hidden and optional quests.
