Tips & Tricks
Short, checked tips for Nytheria by topic: the first night, food, mining, enchanting, storage, travel, combat, bosses, dimensions, building, multiplayer, performance, keys, the quest book and graves.
Short tips for every part of the pack, grouped by topic. Each tip names the item, mod or key it is about, and each group links the page with the details. All numbers come from the pack's own files, so they can differ from what you know of a mod elsewhere.
New to the pack? Read Getting Started and Your First Days first. This page is for the moment you think "there must be an easier way".
The first night#
More in Your First Days and Getting Started.
- Start with the leaf. Press L and tick Find Me, the first quest of the chapter One Leaf. Then light a campfire after dark with the torn leaf in your inventory, and the fire answers with a direction.
- Pack for the walk. The journal site lies 120 to 260 blocks from the fire that answered, so take torches, food and a weapon.
- Get a bed early.
Early Bedtime lets you sleep from tick 11,500, earlier than Vanilla, so a bed skips most of the night. Beds work in the Overworld, the Aether, the Otherside, Eternal Starlight and the Twilight Forest.
- Read food values.
AppleSkin shows hunger and saturation in every food tooltip, so you can pick the best meal at a glance.
- Expect mimics. Artifact campsites generate between Y -60 and 40, and 3 in 10 of their chests are mimics. A killed mimic drops a random artifact, so the fight is worth it.
- Do not fear the first death. When you die, a grave keeps your items and XP, so a bad first night does not cost you your tools. See Death and graves below.
Food and farming#
More in Farming & Cooking.
- Hunger drains slower.
HungerDial makes all hunger 35 % slower than in Vanilla, so a full food bar lasts about 54 % longer.
- Aim for 14 hunger. The strongest dishes restore 14 hunger, for example Goulash from
[Let's Do] Farm & Charm and Baked Cod Stew from
Farmer's Delight Refabricated. The Farmer's Breakfast restores 7.
- Set the table. Food eaten from a Candlelight table set fills 30 % more, and 50 % more when you wear the full suit or dress.
- Carry stews. Mushroom stew, beetroot soup and rabbit stew stack in Nytheria, so you can take more than one.
- Harvest with a hoe.
RightClickHarvest needs a hoe in your hand. Right-click a ripe crop to harvest and replant it, and hoes of different tiers harvest several blocks at once.
- Use rich soil and sprinklers. Rich soil gives crops a 20 % chance of an extra growth boost, and a Water Sprinkler waters crops within 8 blocks.
- Let villagers help.
Smarter Farmers (farmers replant) makes farmer villagers replant what they pick, and
Universal Bone Meal lets bone meal work on 14 more targets such as sugar cane, cactus, vines and nether wart.
- Hold to cast.
Tide 2 replaces Vanilla fishing: hold the use button and release to cast, then play the short minigame. The Fishing Journal is not handed out, so craft it from any Tide fish and a book.
Tools and mining#
More in Mining & Everyday Tools and Controls.
- Find your Ultimine key first.
FTB Ultimine (Fabric) sits on the key the game calls World 2, which American keyboards do not have. Search "Ultimine" in the key binds and pick another key.
- Mine whole veins. Hold the Ultimine key and break one block: up to 32 connected blocks break at once. You need a tool in hand, each block costs 14.4 exhaustion, and Ultimine stops when the tool has 2 durability left.
- Change the shape. Hold the Ultimine key and sneak to open the shape menu.
- Fell trees with one log.
FallingTree cuts a whole tree of up to 150 logs. A bigger tree is not felled at all, and sneaking while you chop breaks one log only.
- Find any biome. A compass from
Nature's Compass searches for the biome you pick. It costs no XP and never breaks.
- Block spawns at home. A
Magnum Torch stops natural monster spawns around it, but not spawners or the mobs of structures.
- Carry a chest.
Carry On moves block entities such as chests and furnaces with an empty hand, but not Sophisticated Storage, waystones or Chipped benches. Use Packing Tape for Sophisticated Storage.
Enchanting and gear upkeep#
More in Enchanting & Anvils.
- Reroll for points, not levels. The table of
Easy Magic keeps your item and lapis inside. A reroll costs 5 XP points and 1 lapis.
- Forget "Too Expensive".
Easy Anvils has no such limit, and an anvil has a 5 % chance to break per use (Vanilla 12 %).
- Save good enchantments. Put an enchanted item and a book into an anvil, and
Obscura's Anvil Disenchanting moves the enchantments onto the book. The item comes back.
- Stack your books. Identical enchanted books stack to 16 thanks to
Stackable Enchanted Books.
- Mix what Vanilla forbids. Merge Enchantments combines enchantments that normally exclude each other, and Toggle Enchantments switches single enchantments off and on. Its menu sits on the R wheel.
- Armor survives big hits.
Armor Damage Limit stops one hit from taking more than 20 % of an armor piece's durability.
Storage#
More in Storage & Logistics, Backpacks & Portable Storage and Storage Networks.
- Use the B wheel. B carries three actions: your backpack, the storage terminal and Just Zoom's options. Hold it to choose, or tap to repeat your last pick.
- Know your backpack.
Sophisticated Backpacks (Unofficial Fabric port) holds 27 slots in leather and 108 in diamond, and the netherite backpack holds 120 slots with 7 upgrade slots.
- Upgrade chests in place.
Sophisticated Storage (Unofficial Fabric port) upgrades a chest or barrel through its tiers without emptying it, and Packing Tape moves a full chest.
- Connect the chests you have.
Obscura's Simple Storage: put an Inventory Connector next to your chests and a Storage Terminal on the network, and you can search them all at once. The connector scans 16 blocks.
- Reach storage from afar. A Wireless Terminal works within 32 blocks and the Advanced Wireless Terminal within 128. According to the mod's description, a beacon near the bound terminal extends the advanced one: level 1 for the whole dimension, level 3 for every dimension.
- Let it tidy itself. The Tidy button in a terminal merges stacks and moves strays to the right chests, and a glow item frame with an item on a chest makes that chest take only that item.
- Find your chests. The Highlight button under Tidy in a terminal, or H, outlines every connected inventory through walls for 10 seconds.
- Throw things away. The command
/trashcanopens a trash inventory, and it is also a button in the sidebar.
Travel#
More in Exploration & Travel and Waystones.
- Touch every waystone you pass. A
Waystones waystone only shows up in your list once you have activated it.
- Know the price. Waystones cost experience points, not levels: about 1 point per 100 blocks in the same dimension, at most 27 points, and 27 points for a change of dimension.
- Travel for free. Warp scrolls, warp plates and trips to global waystones cost nothing.
- Take your pets along. Pets and leashed animals travel with you through a waystone, also between dimensions.
- Set three homes.
/sethomesaves up to 3 homes per player./hometakes you there after a 3-second warm-up and a 10-second cooldown.
- Try a random start.
/rtpsends you 500 to 17,500 blocks from spawn, once every 10 minutes. It does not work in the End.
- Glide for free. The gliders of
Kibe Utilities never break. Elytra Slot lets you wear an elytra in its own slot and keep your chestplate on.
- Share the map. On a server,
Unified Xaero Worldmap merges everyone's explored map, so a new player sees what the group found.
Combat#
More in Combat & Gear and Weapons & Fighting.
- Fight in the open.
Better Combat [Fabric & Forge] hits everything in a weapon's swing arc, but the more extra targets one swing hits, the weaker it gets. The penalty stops at 4 extra targets with 50 % less damage.
- Dual wield for speed. Two one-handed weapons attack 20 % faster. You move at half speed while you attack.
- Test your weapon. The Target Dummy of
MmmMmmMmmMmm (Target Dummy) shows the damage of each hit.
- Open many chests for a unique sword.
Simply Swords [Fabric & Forge] unique weapons cannot be crafted. Your chance rises after 25 misses in a chest region, and one is guaranteed at 75. They never appear in village chests.
- Wear your totem.
Charm of Undying (Fabric/Forge/Quilt) lets a Totem of Undying work from the charm slot. The accessories screen has no key, so use its button in the inventory or bind one.
- Pacify a mob type. Advanced Netherite armor makes phantoms, piglins or endermen leave you alone, depending on the tier.
- Check your multiplier.
Player Difficulty scales monsters per player up to 2.5 times. /scalingshows your value, and builders who do not fight stay low.
Bosses#
More in Bosses and The Ender Dragon.
- Count the deaths.
Boss Ultimatum (Modpack Utils Series): from the third player a boss kills, every further player death restores it to half of its maximum health. Retreat and regroup before that happens.
- The dragon is different. From its second player kill, the Ender Dragon heals a flat 120 HP for every further kill. It has 600 HP, set by the pack.
- Know what is not covered. Boss Ultimatum does not cover Cataclysm, the Twilight Forest, the Astral Dimension, Eternal Starlight, the Void Shadow, the Warden or the Elder Guardian.
- Bosses pay twice. The pack's loot table gives bosses a 60 % chance of dropping a quest-book loot cache; which mobs count as bosses is not confirmed yet.
- Follow the Twilight Forest order. Its bosses open in a fixed order: the Naga, then the Twilight Lich, then the Minoshroom and the Alpha Yeti, and so on. See Twilight Forest Bosses.
- Fight Eternal Starlight bosses again. They come back after 30 minutes, so a boss room does not stay cleared.
- Bring friends for scales. The dragon drops at least 3 Dragon Scales, and 2 more for each additional player at 80 % chance each.
- Use the key. Cataclysm armor abilities share H with artifacts and the Twilight Forest actions. See Controls.
Each dimension#
More in Dimensions.
- The Aether: build the portal frame from glowstone and pour water into it. Overworld tools work worse on Aether blocks, so craft Aether tools early.
- The Aether: falling off an island drops you into the Overworld. Entering the Aether gives you starting loot with golden parachutes.
- The Otherside: the Warden always drops the Heart of the Deep, which lights the Reinforced Deepslate portal. The sky is dark all the time.
- Eternal Starlight: the pack does not make you spawn or respawn there. Beds and respawn anchors do work.
- The Twilight Forest: throw a diamond into a pool of water ringed with plants. The portal opens with destructive lightning, so keep the pool away from wooden walls.
- The Twilight Forest: it has no quests. Its bosses unlock through advancements, so check them on the advancement screen. The key is unbound, so bind one or use the pause menu.
- The End: Vanilla Eyes of Ender cannot be thrown or placed. A placed End Remastered eye can be taken out of the frame again.
- Respawn anchors: they work in the Nether, Eternal Starlight and the Astral Dimension only. An anchor does nothing in the Overworld.
- The Astral Dimension: beds do not work there, and neither does Setback. Light the Astral portal with Glint and Steel, which is glowstone dust and an iron ingot.
Farms and automation#
More in Storage & Logistics and Farming & Cooking.
- Kill like a player. The Mob Masher of
Mob Grindworks counts its kills as player kills, so mobs drop their player-only loot. Each upgrade slot takes up to 10 upgrades.
- Vacuum the farm. The Absorption Hopper collects items and XP in a 7 x 7 x 7 area, and each Radius Upgrade adds 1, up to 6 upgrades.
- Hop in any direction.
Obscura's Omni Hopper pulls from any side and pushes to any other side, 1.6 times as fast as a Vanilla hopper.
- Store XP. Mob Grindworks keeps XP as liquid XP in tanks. A glass bottle on a tank holding at least 200 mB gives a Bottle o' Enchanting.
- Keep farms loaded with claims. The Kibe chunk loader is disabled. Forceload up to 10 chunks per player with claims instead; they stay loaded while you are online.
Building#
More in Building & Decoration.
- Get block variants for free. The seven
Chipped workbenches turn one block into its variants at no extra cost.
- Build in shapes. Press Left Alt for the build modes of
Sophisticated Building: shapes, mirrors and arrays. In Survival you raise your reach with Reach Upgrades.
- Break in bulk, safely. Mass breaking works in Survival and stops before your tool breaks.
- Saw without a grid. The Saw block of
Sawmill cuts wood into its shapes without a crafting grid, and
KleeSlabs lets you break one half of a double slab.
- Hang chains between posts.
Connectible Chains [Fabric] connects chains up to 16 blocks apart, and
Double Doors opens linked doors together.
- Power the furniture. MrCrayfish's electric furniture needs a generator within 80 blocks.
Multiplayer etiquette#
More in Multiplayer and Claims & Parties.
- Loot without racing.
Lootr Remastered gives every player their own loot in structure chests. You can break one only while you sneak, and breaking it takes the chest away from others, so leave it standing.
- Make a party early. Create one with
/ftbteams party create <name>, and the claims mod mirrors it. A team needs 2 members before it has team claims.
- Claims do not stop PvP. Combat between players is allowed inside claims by default.
- Leave graves alone. Other players can open your grave only after 24 hours, and the owner is told who did it.
- Ask before you open a backpack. Other players can open the backpack you wear, and Carry On can even pick players up.
- Mind the forceloads. Team forceloads stay loaded while any member is online, so they keep running as long as one of you plays.
- Talk at the right range.
Simple Voice Chat reaches 48 blocks, and whispering reaches 24.
- Share the progress. Quest progress belongs to the team, but each player claims their own rewards.
Performance#
More in Performance & Shaders.
- Turn shaders off first. K toggles them, and it is the biggest single gain.
- Lower the render distance step by step. After shaders it helps most.
- Do not overshoot the memory. The pack recommends 10 GB, and
Memory Settings warns above 12,288 MB.
- Leave TickMender alone.
TickMender has 40 switches and 39 are on. Change one only if you can say which fix causes your problem.
- Record lag before you report it.
spark is a profiler for the client and the server. Attach its report when you ask for help.
Controls and Polybind wheels#
More in Controls.
- Tap or hold. When several actions share a key,
Polybind lets you tap to repeat your last choice and hold to open a wheel.
- Type commands with T. The pack unbinds chat-with-command, so open the chat with T and start with
/.
- Clean up a wheel. The Polybind button in the key binds screen, or
/polybind, lets you change how each shared key works.
- Give push to talk its own key. A wheel pick is a single press and cannot be held. See Controls.
- Look up any item. Point at an item and press R for its recipe or U for its uses (
EMI).
- Sort with the mouse. The middle mouse button sorts by creative order. Hold Shift for quantity, Ctrl for alphabet or Alt for raw id.
- Zoom and crawl. Hold C to zoom and press Right Ctrl to crawl.
Quest book tricks#
More in The Quest Book.
- Open the next part sooner. One chapter's capstone is enough to open the next part, so you can move on without finishing every chapter of the part you are in. See Chapter Gates & Book Order.
- Keep your items. No quest takes your items. Craft a thing once, tick the quest and keep using it.
- Claim your rewards. They are not given automatically. Open the finished quest and click each reward.
- Pick the rare item from a kit. A choice kit lets you take one of three items, so take the one you could not easily get.
- Open caches in bulk. About 1 in 67 hostile mobs drops a cache. Right-click one to open it, or sneak and right-click to open the whole stack.
- Carry Ember Coins. An Ember Coin in your inventory goes into your ember wallet by itself.
- Share the book. Press P, pick the teams screen on the wheel and join a team to share quest progress.
Death and graves#
More in Death, Graves & Respawning.
- Walk back with
/back. It takes you to your previous position, including the place you died, with a 3-second warm-up and a 30-second cooldown.
- Follow the death waypoint. Your minimap marks the spot and removes the mark when you get close.
- Right-click the grave.
You're in Grave Danger stores all your items and your XP. A grave never times out and glows within 15 blocks.
- Use scrolls to go back. After a death your XP is in the grave, so waystone trips cost what you do not have. Scrolls and warp plates are free.
- Eat before you fight again. A death starts a penalty of 50 % more hunger and 30 % less damage for 5 minutes. Recover the grave first.
