Waystones are stone shrines you activate once and can then teleport between, from anywhere you carry a way to open the menu. This page is a child of Exploration & Travel and covers the Waystones mod as Nytheria ships it: what you can craft, what a trip costs, and what changes in this pack.

How it works#

A waystone is a block you find in the world or craft yourself. Walk up to it and activate it, and from then on it is on your list. Open the selection menu with a Warp Stone, a Warp Scroll or by using another waystone, and you can pick any waystone you have already activated. Each trip may cost experience, as described below.

Visibility follows activation. A waystone is visible to a player once he has activated it, so a shrine you never walked up to does not show on your list. Only the owner may edit a waystone that a player placed. The edit screen also has "Visible to Team", "Visible to matching Sharestones" and "Teleports via Attuned Shard" options.

Activated waystones also appear on your map as waypoints, so you can see the network at a glance. See Maps & Navigation for the map side.

Block and item families#

The mod adds a lot of variants. For a wiki reader the useful ones are these:

  • Waystones: 10 styles (stone brick, mossy, sandy, blackstone, deepslate, end stone, mud bricks, prismarine, purpur, red nether bricks).
  • Sharestones: 15 colours (every dye except white). A sharestone teleports you to any other sharestone of its colour.
  • Portstones: 16 colours. You cannot teleport to a portstone.
  • Warp Plate: a plate you stand on for 0.75 seconds. Plates are linked to each other with shards.
  • Warp Portal: a portal created by a Portal Scroll; it needs free space.
  • Fleeting Memorial: created on death by an Epitaph.
  • Items: Warp Stone, Warp Scroll, Return Scroll, Portal Scroll, Blank Scroll, Bound Scroll, Warp Dust, Dormant Shard, Attuned Shard, Crumbling Attuned Shard, Deepslate Shard, Twinbound Feather and Epitaph.

Recipes#

The pack changes none of the mod's recipes. All of them need a Warp Stone sooner or later, so make that first.

The mossy waystone can also be made from a waystone plus 3 moss blocks or 3 vines.

Numbers and settings in Nytheria#

The cost of a trip is paid in experience points, not levels. This is the most common mistake about waystones, and the table below gives the pack's values.

SettingValueWhat it means for you
Cost in the same dimension0.01 point per blockAbout 1 experience point per 100 blocks
Cost between dimensions27 pointsFlat price for any dimension change
Maximum cost27 points27 points equal 3 levels counted from level 0
Free sourcesscrolls, Warp PlatesNo experience paid
Free targetsglobal waystones, Fleeting MemorialsNo experience paid
Cooldown300 s after using the inventory buttonThe only cooldown the pack defines; the pack leaves the button setting empty

Warp Plate cooldown20 ticks (1 s)Plates recharge fast

Put plainly: a trip of 1,000 blocks costs about 10 points, and the price stops growing at 2,700 blocks. Crossing between dimensions always costs 27 points, which is the same as the cap. The prices apply when the source is a Warp Stone, a waystone, a sharestone or a portstone, unless the target is global.

Step by step#

  1. Find or craft a first waystone. Villages in desert, plains, savanna, snowy and taiga biomes are guaranteed to have one, and wild waystones appear elsewhere (see below). Walk up to it to activate it.
  2. Craft a Warp Stone. You need 4 amethyst shards, 4 ender pearls and an emerald. Using it opens the waystone selection menu. It has 128 durability and wears down with use.
  3. Place your own waystones. Craft a Waystone from 3 stone bricks, 3 obsidian and a Warp Stone, and place it at home and at places you will return to.
  4. Make scrolls for emergencies. Use a Blank Scroll on a waystone to bind it (the Bound Scroll then shows "Bound to: ..."). A Warp Scroll opens the selection menu, like the Warp Stone. The pack's cost rule treats scrolls as free (see the note below).
  5. Link far-off bases with plates or sharestones. A Dormant Shard attunes a Warp Plate, an Attuned Shard is brought to a second plate, and a Deepslate Shard locks a plate.

Sharing places with other players#

Each player activates waystones for himself, so a friend who has never visited your base does not see its waystone on his list. Sharestones are the shared option: all sharestones of one colour connect to each other, and anyone can use them. Portstones work the other way round: you can leave from one, but nobody can teleport to it. Only the owner can edit a waystone that a player placed.

Which team system backs the "Visible to Team" option was not traced, so the page does not promise that party members see each other's waystones. Sharestones are the sure way to give a group one network.

Looks and map icons#

The pack includes a texture pack for the waystone blocks, Fresh Waystones Texture, and the Xaero maps show activated waystones and sharestones as waypoints. The map side is on Maps & Navigation.

Where wild waystones generate#

The pack lets waystones generate in the world on its own. Wild waystones are spaced 25 chunks apart, with the style following the biome, and village waystones are on at the regular rate. Names are random. The jar also adds guaranteed waystones to villages in desert, plains, savanna, snowy and taiga biomes.

Wild waystones generate only in the Overworld, the Nether and the End. The Aether, Twilight Forest, Otherside, Eternal Starlight and Astral dimensions get none, so bring waystones of your own (and the 27 points to reach them) when you go there. See Dimensions for how to get in.

Tips#

  • Keep a stack of Warp Scrolls. The pack's cost rule makes trips that start from a scroll free, so they are the cheapest way home when you are low on points.
  • Plan the 27-point dimension crossing. Collect experience before you leave, because the price is flat.
  • Bring your pets. Tamed animals and leashed animals travel with you, including across dimensions, but the Wither does not.
  • Place a waystone beside every base and every nether portal. Trips to a global waystone are free, but ordinary players cannot manage global waystones in this pack.
  • An Epitaph creates a Fleeting Memorial when you die, and trips to a memorial cost no experience.
  • Waystone commands are all operator commands, so you cannot use /waystones in normal play.

In the quest book#

The chapter The Marked Road in Part 1 asks you to place one waystone, then two waystones plus a bound scroll. Its quests pay a Warp Stone and warp scrolls (4, then 8), plus Traveller's Cache rolls. The Wayfarer's Bundle (4 warp scrolls, 8 lanterns, 4 maps) is one of the choice kits in the Hearth and Home chapter Shelves and Signposts.

Changed from the old wiki#

Earlier versions of this wiki said a trip costs 1 experience level per 100 blocks, up to 27 levels. In the current pack the cost is experience points: about 1 point per 100 blocks, at most 27 points (3 levels from zero), and 27 points for a change of dimension.
