The Ender Dragon is the boss of The End and the only boss in Nytheria that several mods rebuild at once. The pack sets its health to 600, three times the vanilla 200, and layers a rebuilt fight, stronger crystals and a death penalty on top. This page belongs to Bosses and covers the fight from arrival to the drops. To get in, read The End Portal & the 16 Eyes first.

The Ender Dragon#

Where and how to start the fight#

The fight takes place on the central island of the End. Two mods rebuild the island: Better End Remastered keeps the dragon fight, the central island and the obsidian platform switched on, and YUNG's Better End Island adds a central bell tower and custom spawn platform and gateways. According to the mod's description, the dragon appears when a player approaches the tower.

TickMender waits for the arena chunks to load at the first fight, so the first arrival can take a moment.

You can fight the dragon again. The optional quest What She Never Saw asks you to kill it a second time with four end crystals, which is the Vanilla way to resummon it.

The fight#

The pack combines four sources. They are listed in the next section, "What changes the fight". In short:

  • Rebuilt phases. The data pack of True Ending changes the dragon from health thresholds. According to the pack's data, at 66.6 % health it unlocks stronger fireballs and a chance of repeated dives, a laser beam follows at 33.3 %, and a final phase begins at 10 %.
  • Savage crystals. Dragonfight Mod is set to difficulty 4 and makes the dragon deal 1.25 times damage.
  • Crystals come back. Destroyed crystals respawn, and how you kill them matters.
  • A death penalty. Boss Ultimatum heals the dragon for each player it kills directly, starting with its 2nd player kill.

Drops#

Every kill gives XP and drops a Dragon Egg, including a resummoned dragon. DragonLoot adds Dragon Scales: a minimum of 3, plus 2 for each extra player, with an 80 % chance of extras. Dragon armor, tools and a Dragon Anvil are crafted from the scales. Simply Swords also adds a loot injection with weight 5.0 to the dragon's loot table.

In the quest book#

The chapter The Far Shore in Part 8 covers the dragon. It has 19 quests: 15 required, one optional and 3 hidden. The quest The Dragon pays an Ashfall Cache roll and 6 XP levels. After the kill the chapter asks for the dragon egg and for dragon breath, then for End structures. Titans of Nytheria has an optional quest, Too Far, for the same boss.

What changes the fight#

The table lists everything in the pack that changes the dragon or the arena, rewritten as what you notice.

SourceWhat you notice
Nytheria Dragon Tuning (pack data pack)The dragon has 600 HP, and True Ending's load chat message is removed
True EndingThe dragon has a Totem of Undying and a knockback resistance of 300; phase changes at 66.6 %, 33.3 % and 10 % health; a laser beam from 33.3 %; in the final phase it is forced to perch after 30 seconds and is invulnerable except while perched; phantom guards stand on the crystal towers; the action bar shows how many End Crystals are left; custom music
Dragonfight ModDifficulty 4 (the mod default is 2); dragon damage x1.25; crystal respawn time modifier 0.85; killing a crystal in melee costs the dragon 10 % health; a lingering potion appears when a crystal dies; anti-flight measures and explosion immunity; no natural mob spawns on the island; blazes appear on crystal respawn, phantoms after a ranged crystal kill, and endermen while the dragon is landed
Boss UltimatumSee the next section
YUNG's Better End IslandA rebuilt island with a bell tower; every kill of the dragon, even a resummoned one, drops an egg
Better End RemasteredKeeps the fight on; its mixins handle respawn logic and the exit portal and shape the pillars
DragonLootDragon Scales and dragon gear
Player DifficultyThe dragon is NOT scaled; it pays bonus XP
End RemasteredGates the way to the End with eyes
Outer End structuresDungeons and Taverns End Castle has its own mini-bosses: a phantom boss with 200 HP, a shulker boss with 90 and a shulker mini boss with 60

True Ending's own default for the dragon would be 300 HP, but the pack's value is set first. At 600 HP (under 1,024) True Ending's extra health bar is not used. The Dragonfight Mod's own HP scaling is switched off, so the 600 comes only from the pack.

Phases and numbers#

The True Ending data pack drives the fight from the dragon's health, measured in per mille of its maximum. The values below come from the pack's data-pack code, not from the mod's page.

Health leftWhat the data pack does
100 %The dragon starts with a Totem of Undying and a knockback resistance base of 300
66.6 %Ultra fireballs unlock (20 % chance per minute) and the chance of repeated dives begins
Dive attacksAbout 6 % chance per second when the dragon is idle, with shockwaves
33.3 %A laser beam unlocks (20 % chance per second)
10 %Final phase: the dragon is forced to perch after 30 seconds and is invulnerable except while perched

The Dragonfight Mod adds a second layer of settings that you can feel from the first crystal:

SettingValueWhat it means for you
Dragon difficulty4The mod default is 2; it scales mob spawns, dragon damage and crystal respawn
Dragon damage modifier1.25The dragon hits harder
Crystal respawn time modifier0.85Crystals come back sooner
Crystals respawnonDestroyed crystals return
Health scalingoffThe mod adds no HP; the 600 comes from the pack

Boss Ultimatum#

Boss Ultimatum is a death penalty for boss fights, not a boss rush. It covers the Ender Dragon and 14 other bosses. Only players the boss kills directly count, not deaths from other causes. The Ender Dragon heals a flat 120 HP for each player it kills directly, starting with its 2nd player kill. The other covered bosses are instead restored to half of their max health from their 3rd player kill.

So a death caused directly by the dragon costs you more than the loss of your items. See Death, Graves & Respawning for how to get your gear back, and Difficulty & Player Scaling for why the dragon's HP is not scaled with your gear.

Preparation#

The facts support these points:

  • Plan for a long fight. The dragon has 600 HP and heals 120 HP for each player it kills directly, starting with its 2nd player kill, so deaths cost you progress.
  • Bring a way to kill crystals from range and in melee. A melee kill costs the dragon 10 % health, while a ranged kill makes phantoms appear.
  • Expect blazes and endermen. The island has no natural mob spawns, but blazes appear when a crystal respawns and endermen appear while the dragon is landed.
  • See Combat & Gear for weapons and armor.
  • Do not count on beds or respawn anchors in the End. Neither works there. See The End.

After the dragon#

The chapter The Far Shore continues with the Better End eternal portal, the Mystical End structures (ship, castle, spire, archway), the gateway, dragon egg and breath, an End city, shulkers and finally elytra with 10,000 blocks flown. The next chapter, Past the Last Island, covers the outer End. You can read about it on The End.

The Better End exit portal is found or built by the mod after the fight, and the dragon egg drops on every kill.

Notes#

  • True Ending thresholds. The 66.6 %, 33.3 % and 10 % thresholds come from the pack's data pack code. The mod page for True Ending says the dive starts below 75 %. The code uses 66.6 %. This page uses the code.
  • Changing the health. True Ending has a player settings menu that can set the dragon's health from 1 to 4096. An admin or player using that menu changes the 600.
  • Load order. Nobody has tested whether the pack's data-pack function wins over the mod's own copy when the world loads.
  • Egg drops. Better End Remastered and YUNG's Better End Island both say a resummoned dragon drops an egg. AdventureZ has a separate flag for the same thing that is switched off. Which setting wins has not been tested.
