Fishing with Tide
How fishing works in Nytheria with the Tide mod - 102 fish, 13 rods, hooks, lines, bait, the catching minigame, crates and void fishing - and how to cook what you catch.
Fishing in Nytheria is not the vanilla bobber. The
Tide mod replaces it with rods you upgrade, hooks that decide which fish can bite, a short minigame for every catch and crates that you fish up and open. This page is a child of Farming & Cooking and covers the gear, the fish and the pack's settings.
Overview#
Tide 2.1.1 adds 102 fish, 13 rods, 6 hooks, 5 lines, 35 bobbers and 5 kinds of bait. The fish live in five groups of water: freshwater, saltwater, underground, lava and the void. Hooks change which fish are available, and you land what bites in a minigame.
Wakes, the mod that draws water wakes, is cosmetic and does not change fishing.
The 102 fish are also living creatures: each one is a mob in the water, and a bucket can hold a live one. They are the reason for the "fish included" wording in the pack's mob counts. According to the mod's code, 74 of the 102 have a natural spawn setting, so some fish also swim in the world without a rod. Where the lava, End and void fish spawn in practice has not been checked.
What the pack changes#
Tide's config sits in two files, one for the server and one for the client. These are the values the pack ships.
| Setting | Value | What it means for you |

| Hold to cast | on | according to the mod's description, you hold right-click and release to cast |
| Rod durability multiplier | 1.0 | normal rod wear |
| Minigame | on, difficulty x1.0 | every catch is a short minigame |
| Third-party minigames | on | minigames from other mods may be used |
| Fish item sizes | always | a caught fish item has a size |
| Bucketable fish | when living | you can bucket a live fish |
| Crate weight | 4.0 | crates are among the things you can fish up |
| Starting journal | off | you are not given a Fishing Journal |
| Void fishing height | Overworld and Nether -6 (relative to the bottom), End 50 | the heights at which void fishing works |
| Info display | top right | where the client shows fishing information |
Rods#
Thirteen rods exist. You build most of them by upgrading one rod into the next at a smithing table, using a string template with the metal or gem shown below.
| Rod | How you get it |
|---|---|
| Stone | 3 cobblestone and 2 string |
| Iron | smithing: vanilla rod or a lower Tide rod, an iron ingot and a string template |
| Golden | smithing: the same, with a gold ingot |
| Diamond | smithing: the same, with a diamond |
| Crystal | upgrade with an amethyst shard |
| Netherite | Diamond Rod, a netherite ingot and a netherite upgrade template |
| Midas | Golden Rod and a Midas Fish |
| Suncatcher | found as loot, in the table gameplay/fishing/sunflower_rod |
| Blazing, Rod of Resonance, Beeline, Prismarine, Rod of the Hero | no recipe or loot entry found yet |
Hooks, lines, bobbers and bait#
According to the mod's changelog, each part of the setup does one job. Hooks change which fish are available, lines change the minigame, bobbers are cosmetic and bait changes your fishing stats. Rods differ in how many slots and which stats they have.
| Part | Recipe |
|---|---|
| Fishing Hook | 2 iron nuggets, cobblestone |
| Lavaproof Hook | gold ingot, 3 obsidian |
| Fiery Hook | blaze rod, 3 iron ingots |
| Permafrost Hook | blue ice, 3 iron ingots |
| Twilight Hook | clock, 3 iron ingots |
| Hook of the Depths (void fishing) | 4 crying obsidian, dragon breath |
| Fishing Line | 3 string |
| Copper, Iron, Golden, Diamond Line | a Fishing Line between 2 ingots or gems |
| Bait (makes 4) | bait plant, rotten flesh, seeds, bone meal |
| Lucky Bait (makes 16) | 8 bait, rabbit foot |
Tide has 5 bait items (Bait, Abyss, Incandescent, Lucky and Magnetic) plus 13 bait entries in its data. The 35 bobbers are cosmetic. Bait and Lucky Bait have a crafting recipe. The other kinds are not covered by one: the quest chapter Still Water pays Lucky and Magnetic bait on the way, and Traveller's Cache loot can hold Tide lucky bait.
The Angling Table and gadgets#
The Angling Table (2 string, 2 copper ingots, 2 planks) is where you fit a hook, a line, a bobber and bait to a rod, and where you take them off again. Put it in your base before you go fishing seriously.
Tide also adds a few blocks and gadgets. The blocks are a Fish Display (8 sticks and a log), a Jelly Torch, a Lunar Calendar, a Weather Radio and three crates (wooden, obsidian and purpur). The gadgets are a Pocket Watch, a Depth Meter, a Climate Gauge, a Fish Finder and a Fish Satchel. The Fish Finder is built from a pocket watch, a lunar calendar, a depth meter, a climate gauge and a weather radio. A Wooden Crate is 8 wooden slabs.
Where the fish live#
Tide sorts its 102 fish into five groups.
| Group | Fish |
|---|---|
| Freshwater | 22 |
| Saltwater | 23 |
| Underground | 20 |
| Lava | 11 |
| Void | 26 |
| Total | 102 |
According to the mod's changelog, hooks change which fish are available, so the hook is what takes you from one group to another. The Hook of the Depths is the void hook, and the pack's Nether and End also have their own Tide fish. Which hook catches which fish was not tested for this page.
The catching minigame#
When a fish bites, you play a short minigame. According to the mod's description, you right-click when the bar is inside the coloured region, and each fish has its own movement and strength. The pack keeps the difficulty multiplier at 1.0. According to the mod's changelog, the line you use changes the minigame.
Crates and the journal#
Crates are part of fishing. You fish them up (they have a weight of 4.0 in the pack), then open them for loot. Tide has nine crate loot tables: surface freshwater, saltwater and lava, deep, deep lava, underground, underground lava, nether and end. The Fishing Boat chest has its own table.
The Fishing Journal is Tide's journal of fish. You craft it from any Tide fish and a book, because the pack does not hand it out. On the client, the journal shows time as AM/PM and temperatures in Celsius, and its toasts are off on the server.
After the catch#
Cook fish by smelting, smoking or on a campfire. You can also cut any cookable fish into fish slices on the
Farmer's Delight cutting board. See Cooking, Meals & Drinks for what slices are good for.
How it fits together#
- Early: the cheapest recipes. An Angling Table (string, copper ingots, planks), a Fishing Hook (iron nuggets and cobblestone), a Fishing Line (string) and a Stone Rod (cobblestone and string).
- Mid: upgrade the rod at a smithing table through Iron, Golden and Diamond, and try the other hooks. The Lavaproof Hook needs a gold ingot and 3 obsidian.
- Late: Tide rods up to Netherite, and the Hook of the Depths for void fishing, which needs 4 crying obsidian and dragon breath.
This is a route, not a rule. The pack never makes you fish, and the quest chapter that does is optional.
In the quest book#
The chapter Still Water in Part 2 is the fishing chapter. You sit by water for a minute, get a rod and Tide bait, an iron rod and a fishing hook, make ten catches, collect five Tide items and place a crate and a fish display. Only the capstone, a Tide diamond fishing rod, is required. It pays a choice from the Fisher's Bundle: a fishing rod, 4 Tide lucky bait or 8 Tide cooked fish.
Tips#
- Craft the Fishing Journal yourself: the pack does not give you one.
- Bait is made in fours, and Lucky Bait in sixteens from 8 bait and a rabbit foot, so stock up before a long session.
- The pack lets you bucket a live fish, so keep a bucket when you want a fish rather than an item.
- Cut fish into slices on a Farmer's Delight cutting board, or cook them, before you eat them; see Cooking, Meals & Drinks.
- Operators have
/tidecommands (permission level 2); normal players do not.
